We chose this place based purely on its location and hoped for the best. It didn’t wow us, but it didn’t disappoint. My biggest issue is that there was no one in the office for check in, our key was in an envelope with our names on it taped to the office door with a page of instructions, and we had to call the number on the instruction sheet to find out about things like the wifi only to be told that it was in “the notebook”. The notebook they referred to was buried in a basket that I had to dig around and find. The notebook had interesting information in it, like a page instructing us not to turn the a/c below 70° or it would freeze and we’d have no a/c. The dishes in the cabinet and drawer were not clean, guests are to wash, dry, and put dishes away and someone didn’t seem to understand what that means,

Great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful views.

This place was great. Parking was tight, but enough spaces available. Rooms were a bit dated and could use some general maintenance. Never met the front office staff, but check in and out was easy. The view made up for any problem we may have had!!

Our stay was amazing. You are transported back in time to this quaint, little, cabin like room and property. It is quiet, peaceful, and relaxing. Property is right on the river. We sat by the river on the swing in the mornings. I sat on a rock reading a book for hours while listening to the sounds of the river. At night, we were able to make a fire and hang out with other guest at the fire pit.

I would have given it a 5 star rating, but the TV was not working due to internet issues...
- 5/5
Very clean and quiet

Beautiful view of the river and the lady at check-in was extremely friendly.

The cutest little place right in chimney rock. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. The room was super cozy and clean with a nice balcony and view of the river.

Owners were super nice and accommodating. Room was quaint for just 2 nights, not a lot of moving around room. The bathroom did its job, towels were soft and plenty, even had makeup towels and complementary essentials. Just some mold up the walls and on the ceiling, there was no fan in there. The river was the nicest addition to the stay. Since the room was small, it was nice to sit out on the rocker or go down on the rocks and watch the river. The downtown tourist area is a minute down the road. It is such a nice spot we would definitely consider coming back.
- 5/5
It was a wonderful, peaceful, relaxing weekend. Staff was friendly and the room was so nice and the view was amazing
- 5/5
it was a bit small but very confortable. the sifa bed was pretty good. overall, it was great.
- 5/5
What a lovely and charming property!! The view out the back porch was tranquil. I was surprised we had such a nice mountain and river view! The room itself is adorable, clean, and has a homey feel. The owners are very kind and accommodating, and the coffee out front in the morning was great! We had a wonderful two-night stay, and we look forward to staying again! The ceilings are a bit low, but we are 5’6 and 5’9 and did just fine! Thank you again for looking up firework information for us!
- 4/5
I have mixed feelings about this place. The location was ok. I LOVED the creek behind the place and I would stay here again just because of that. I LOVED seating on the porch looking at chimney rock also while listening to the creek and birds. Ok I love nature and the back of this place did it for me. The property itself is fine, BUT only bcz I’m 5’2. I could touch the ceiling and my arm wasn’t even fully extended. Anyone over 5’6 would have to dock. No coffee in the room, but they do provide coffee in the front office.

Amazing location

I was met in reception by someone who barked at me like I was trespassing. I took the key went to the room, looked around and went straight back to reception handed back the key and left. Very disappointing.
- 5/5
Absolutely beautiful view! The owners were so accommodating and sweet. A bit older but comfy beds and clean.
- 5/5
The views were amazing and the staff was great

The Evening Shade hotel is amazing - we have now been a few times and each time it does not disappoint. The staff is friendly. The cabins are wonderful. The scenery is breattaking… it is truly our favorite spot in all of the Blue Ridge Mountains! Thank you to the wonderful owners, too! We love the Evening Shade!
- 4/5
This is a relaxing, family friendly location. We enjoyed the rocky beach area, the cold river water and so many places to sit and relax. Exactly as pictured and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We plan to stay again!
- 5/5
Great place! Friendly owners and guests. Gorgeous surroundings. Couldn't ask for a better getaway!
- 4/5
Offered backyard access to the river Had a balcony to sit and enjoy the sounds of the water Grill access Was very clean and quiet Was about 2 minutes from restaurants and shops in Chimney Rock Was about 5 minutes from Lake Lure Cons: Property was right on the highway; therefore, there was road noise. The rooms were dated; bathroom very small No coffeepot in the room; however, you could use the one in the front office
- 5/5
Very nice place to stay
- 5/5
The room was clean and cozy the staff was helpful and friendly loved the creek behind the room would definitely stay again
- 4/5
That being said, the wifi in that area is very spotty. Also, the bathroom fixtures were old, but everything did work. Parking was a little tricky as well.
- 5/5
We love Evening Shade and have visited many times. Clean and comfortable. Right on the river. Within walking distance of restaurants and shops.
- 5/5
Perfect accommodations, beautiful scenery, excellent price, wonderful stay!
- 5/5
Beautiful location on the river. Easy to check-in and easy checkout. Definitely will come back!!
- 5/5
Quaint lodge on the Broad River, just below Chimney Mountain. Open the windows and let the sounds of the Broad River lull you to sleep. Wake up with coffee and enjoy the view and sounds. We will definitely stay there again if in the area.
- 5/5
I really enjoy staying at Evening Shade. This was my 4th visit over the past few years. I love that you can sit beside the river. They have picnic tables, wood for a campfire.
- 5/5
Absolutely beautiful property with river view
- 5/5
Great time again. Love the view and being able to relax right by the river
- 5/5
We stayed in the bungalow apt and enjoyed our stay. It was spacious and clean. Plenty of clean towels. The kitchen was well outfitted for cooking and eating in, which we did on the covered private deck since it rained. The riverside area is the best in Chimney Rock IMHO. There are grills and firepits and seating to enjoy the beautiful view. It was very stormy during our stay and there was a power outage during the night. The room is outfitted with emergency lighting. This was a blessing because this area is pitch black dark without city light polution casting a glow. It was a little bright, but better than tripping blindly around an unfamiliar space. Thank you to the owners for thinking of these kind of details for their guests. You can tell they care about the property.

The absolute best view and park like setting we were craving on our adventure. The room was not our main attraction which was probably a good thing. Couldn’t get tv to work or wifi. Small space. But we were there to be outside.
- 5/5
Beautiful cabin and beautiful view. Great service. No phone service only wifi
- 5/5
We went for a small girls trip weekend. The views were amazing. The river sounded wonderful, and it was within walking distance to downtown. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend staying here.
- 5/5
My wife and I had a wonderful stay at Evening Shade. It was very clean and the bed was comfortable. There was a balcony overlooking the river and with a view of Chimney Rock. They had grills and picnic tables that we would have used if weather had been permitting. The room we stayed in even had a little kitchen with all amenities. We will definitely be back in the spring to enjoy all the amenities.

Room was great and staff was incredibly nice and accommodating.

Kind of a smack in the face for us on our honeymoon.
- 2/5
Very disappointing.
- 4/5
The view and location of the river was awesome. The proximity of the shops was great. It was just a few things that could’ve been improved in the apartment itself. When I walked across the floor barefoot my feet were dirty, like they had not mopped the floor / lvp. The Faucet in the bathroom needs an aerator. Could’ve used a couple of night stands. Beds are fairly soft, which is not good for my back but my wife loved it. Recommend having one soft mattress and one stiff. Internet was not good very spotty and no USB connections for charging. We enjoyed our stay overall.
- 5/5
Great stay
- 1/5
Although it was a quaint, very tiny room. The window air conditioner, leaked onto the carpet, it was musty, smelling, and damp. My husband could not stand up in the room without hitting his head on the ceiling. He’s 6’3” tall. The shower is was so small. I had to crouch to wash my face. This was not a place for children, or the elderly since walking down to the river, was unsteady and dangerous.
- 5/5
Very quiet, friendly place. The river was beautiful. The only issue wasn’t from the place itself, whether it was someone parking in our spot even though there was a sign stating parking for our room only.
- 3/5
Nice view of waterfall and mountainside. was clean. i was shocked at the ceiling height of the room and bath. i could not fully stand up in the room or shower. ceiling height was barely 6'. Is this legal?
- 5/5
We had the best stay, the rooms are pretty dated but i was only sleeping in it, kitchen had everything we needed, the location couldn't of been better right on the river and away from the crowds in town but close enough to walk.
- 4/5
The view off the porch of our room was relaxing. You could see down to the river, and up to Chimney Rock.
- 2/5
For $$$ a night, you should be able to stand without hitting your head & shower without getting on your knees. Could not sit on deck, overrun with carpenter ants, spider's, web's, sand fleas, & horse flies. We left in the middle of the night to drive home. Why? There is a motion light inside the room, for outside use. The bed was built for Hobbit's & every time we moved, the beacon light from hell turned on. Could not sit by the water, were overwhelmed by horse flies & sand fleas. Property is not kept up.
- 3/5
The images can be a bit misleading as they appear quite larger in the pictures than they do in person. I reserved two rooms and had no issues parking and getting to my rooms. However, the lodge was much smaller than anticipated with little space to move around. I tried to shower at night but was unable to get the water to start running. There was no one to contact as I had no service in the area. The nearby fire pit area was lovely (but quite dangerous, especially for little ones). I was not aware there was a quiet policy from 10pm to 8am so this might be something to consider if you’re traveling with infants. Otherwise, it was peaceful and a unique stay!
- 5/5
It was my third time staying. The place it's unique in its own way. You are close to nature. Will definitely come back.
- 5/5
the river was beautiful
- 5/5
On the river
- 5/5
Great sitting by river and praying. Beautiful setting!
- 3/5
It was SMALL. There were 4 adults and we were under the assumption that there would be room to set up a cot. There wasn’t any room to do so. The bathroom was SMALL. We were there for 3 nights and never got any clean towels. We never saw any housekeepers to ask for any. It was ok to sleep but that’s about it. The back of the property was beautiful with the river passing through. Probably wouldn’t stay there again.
- 5/5
We love the sound of the River and the fire pits. We plan to return.
- 5/5
Refrigerator pretty noisy probably needs to be replaced
- 5/5
Quick getaway to clear the mind. Place was clean and simple. No frills. Just the basics and just what the doctor ordered.
- 5/5
Cozy and welcoming. We're also a LGBTQ couple and felt safe here. Will absolutely stay again.
- 5/5
Very cute lil area. Only thing is the wifi/cell service isn't so great, but that's to be expected in the mountains lol. Very clean, nice staff
- 5/5
Nice an relaxing
- 5/5
Lovely, peaceful stay. Good people. Kind, warm environment. Thank you.
- 5/5
Beautiful view, comfy bed.
- 5/5
It was our first time here and we loved it. Place was very clean. area was well lit and the river was so nice to listen to and watch. Definitely coming back.
- 4/5
Very comfortable stay. Loved the kitchen. It had everything we needed to prepare most of our meals at the property. Chimney Rock was very cute, cute shops and nice restaurants as well as nice tourist attractions. My daughter and I enjoyed swinging by the river at the property one evening while my husband made supper. The road noise was more than I anticipated, but after the first night, we were used to it. Would stay again.
- 2/5
It had a beautiful view of the river, & Chimney rock. It was quiet the only thing I didn’t like about it is my boyfriend is 6 foot six and the ceilings in the room or too low for him he had to walk slumped over & The shower was too small and so was the toilet for him
- 5/5
We arrived later in the evening. Did not see any staff but, they lect us a key. I loved the lodge atmosphere. The bathroom could use an outlet.
- 4/5
The condition of the room could be improved. When booking a room, be sure to fully understand the nuances of the rooms and if it fits the needs of your family. The scenery is hard to beat from the balcony! The perfectly places benches and picnic tables are great for taking in the river’s beauty.
- 5/5
Incredible mattress!
- 5/5
Such a serene spot, was a welcome respite. Very rustic but comfortable. My porch overlooked the river and you could see Chimney Rock from there. Wonderful area and close to town.
- 3/5
Rooms are not insulated and was quite warm during the daytime. Window air conditioner could not keep up. We left a day early due to the warm room. The owner called me and asked why we left early. She then offered us a free nights stay this fall after it cools down. Management was very nice to us. We will take her up on it in November.
- 2/5
It was so awful that we left a day early, even though it was non refundable. We had no hot water, only Roku tv, and the Wi-Fi was so bad we couldn’t use our prime video, Netflix or tv provider to get any other service. There was no hot water! The ceiling in our room was so low that you couldn’t raise your arm. The room was musty and damp and smelled like urine. When we went to office at 6pm to request something it was closed with a note on the door to come back later. Truly an overall terrible experience the only positive was the location, close to everything and the grounds were lovely by the River, but ver difficult to access from our unit. No stars!
- 5/5
The room was super cute, checkin was easy as pie, the a/c was nice and cold, shower worked great, fridge super convenient, comfy bed, crisp clean linens, easy to use tv!!! No complaints at all
- 5/5
Great river access
- 5/5
Highly recommend starting at the evening Shade
- 5/5
I love everything about this beautiful place. My favorite spot to stay and relax. I go here every year twuce a year.
- 5/5
Wonderful location. Great stay
- 4/5
What a quaint, peaceful vacation. Although the room was rustic and a little dark, the bed was so comfortable and the sound of the river was constant and so soothing. The view from the deck was perfect with views of Chimney Rock and the swings by the river were great for reading and relaxing.
- 5/5
Beautiful river! Nice fire pit and sandy beach area. I will definitely return.
- 4/5
Great place to stay.
- 5/5
This is a great place to stay..especially if you love being close to nature, beautiful scenery, convenient indoor/outdoor dining, and quaint shops.
- 5/5
Fantastic stay. Being in the mountains, listening to the water flowing over the rocks was just the day I needed to escape from the world. Peace is the word to describe it.
- 5/5
This place is outstanding great location, great view of the mountains and river very relaxing great people, very clean my sister and myself really enjoyed our stay will definitely be going back there to stay.
- 5/5
Evening Shade was a great place to stay and I really enjoyed the rushing river right outside the door. And the views are amazing.
- 5/5
Beautiful spot with great view! Nice quaint room.
- 5/5
Very comfy and beautiful site of mountains and river
- 5/5
The owners are always so friendly and keep everything clean and tidy!
- 1/5
The property was not handicapped friendly at all. I did not rent a room to be put behind a cliff in a dark hole. The walk way to the room was unlevel and rocks to walk on. I tried to get a refund but I couldn't get any one at expedia to talk to. I will not use you people again if this can't be corrected.
- 5/5
Great little hotel. This was our second time staying here. Our room overlooked the river and the view was amazing and relaxing. Room was comfortable. While we were there a big snow storm was coming in. The owner called me to give me updates on the weather and was genuinely concerned for our safety. You do not get that service at big name chains. Coffee was out in front of office each morning. You feel like you are staying at a relatives place. Highly recommend this motel.
- 5/5
The location on the river was awesome, what a view from our balcony. The rooms are small with no frills, but the view makes up for it. We had a great stay, it snowed 11" our 1st night there. The owners were very friendly. We will return to this place.
- 5/5
I loved the country cabin feel. The river is flowing in the bach part of the property and it's so peaceful to hear while sitting on the deck. Chimney Rock is right behind it and you can see the little waterfall from the property. I love the fact this place has not lost it's old time feel.
- 5/5
Folks who run Evening Shade are nice as can be. I had dinner at a local place which was darned nice experience.
- 5/5
Love, Love this place. It was our first time in Chimney Rock Village. The rooms are cozy and cute! Our room faced the rocks and water. Great location to the village and the state park! You can hear the calming waters from the room and even leave the screen door open to see! Definitely would stay here again. Great price too.
- 4/5
For cleanliness the only place that missing were the bathroom’s sink. Was full with beard hair from previous guests.
- 5/5
I loved this stay because it was just what we needed after a long drive. It was quiet and relaxing. Waking up to the sound of the river was the best part.
