The property is stunning. The room was comfortable, though it could have used more storage space. The plumbing is up-to-date, which is always a concern when booking a vintage property. The various on-duty managers were always friendly, charming and helpful. And it is delightful staying in this neighborhood! I would vigorously recommend this hotel.

Breakfasts were fine, but somewhat limited in options. Parking was extremely convenient, as we were able to park right outside the property every day we were there. Location was great. We were able to walk to great dining experiences and the park across the street was a great place to sit and chat. The top floor reading area was also a great place to relax.

The location was perfect and the walks to get to all the activities/restaurants were beautiful. The hotel does not have many amenities but that didn't matter to us. The historic mansion was an incredible add to our stay in Charleston. The breakfast was a perfect start to the day. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

(But two things essential to our modern life were missing. With all the historic interpretation of the property, there ought to have been more historic research and credit given to the talented enslaved artisans who actually built the home. Also, an energy audit to seal air leaks would have been valuable during the restoration.) All said, the owner's preservation efforts were extraordinary, the property was made lavishly comfortable for guests, and the opportunity to "live" in an historic home that helped shape Charleston as we know it was an incredible treat.

20 South Battery is a wonderful place to stay during your visit to Charleston. The details felt like I’d stepped into a piece of history, and you immediately feel the Southern welcome. The room was elegant, comfortable bed and windows overlooked the garden. You order breakfast the night before and it’s brought right to your door in the morning or you go to the dinning room if you prefer. Definitely a nice touch. They offer complimentary afternoon reception from 5 to 6 PM with charcuterie and non- alcoholic drinks. Everything was excellent: Perfect location, wonderful amenities, and that real Southern hospitality that made my stay feel extra pampered. Thanks.

Exceptional historic home turned B&B in the most heavenly little spot in Charleston! Staff were warm and welcoming with quick and easy check-in and checkout. We were guided on a lovely tour of the home as well (highly recommend this if time allows). The room was spacious and updated; extremely comfortable bedding was a major plus after a long travel day. It was a joy to sit on the front porch in the morning while enjoying the ocean breeze, watching horse drawn carriages trot by, and seeing all the visitors to come to see the beautiful park. This is truly a wonderful place to stay and one of few opportunities to stay in this area of the city; highly recommend 20 South Battery!

The staff are phenomenal. We received a text prior to check-in with specific details to ensure check-in went smoothly. Be sure to complete the tour early in your stay, especially if you're staying in a ground floor suite. I appreciated the focus on hydration as Charleston is warm in June. The on-street parking worked well as most of the available spots opened after 4:00 p.m.

Before going any further, let me say that Ryan was amazing and very helpful with questions. With that said, the problem was the room itself. We were placed in the bowels of the hotel underneath the porch in what I constantly referred to as the sarcophagus. Anytime someone walked on the porch it reverberated in our room. You could hear talking and people returning drunk from a night out. It was miserable and I would never stay in that room, or any of the other rooms in the "sarcophagus" again. The property feels a little long in the tooth and needs maintenance and refreshed. The paint on the area outside the café was peeling badly. We had problems with our plumbing in the room (sarcophagus 6). The cold water in the sink and shower would just stop for a few seconds and then spit and sputter and come back on. This also happened with the toilet. Every time it was flushed the cold water going into the tank would make a horrendous noise refilling the tank. Also, I was very disappointed in the parking, which was on the street, and not on the property as we'd expected.

I really loved this hotel. It felt like a true Charleston experience and the staff was amazing. The location is fabulous too. My one suggestion is I'm always bummed to see the tiny plastic shampoo and conditioner bottles in this day and age. Half the product doesn't come out and they get thrown away after a use or two, which is so wasteful. This is such an elegant hotel, I hope they transition this in their showers sometime soon. But still highly recommend!

Hotel cancelled last minute (while we were on a plane) and had no availability despite us having an invoice that showed we had paid in full. Had to rebook for a (much more expensive hotel) further from the action in Charleston. Two hours on phone to secure rooms in alternative hotel. We were visiting with some friends from Scotland. Quite the worst experience I've ever had on Hotels.com or in a hotel generally. And what's more....Hotels.com don't seem to believe the PDF of our invoice...that they sent us!!!!!

A note re: our room. We booked a room that was on the "ground" floor, which was more or less the basement or carriage house floor. It was fine, but I envisioned something a little different. Also, as we were drifting off to sleep, there was a sound in the walls that sounded like scratching...almost like an animal was in the walls. But, all in all, we enjoyed our stay there.

We stayed in a carriage house room. It was quiet and nice enough. However, I would recommend spending a little more for a room to stay in the actual home. Carriage House although nicely decorated, quiet and extremely comfortable had a bit of a motel feel since attached to home in back. It was wonderful to order breakfast via card prior to 7pm every night to have delivered every am to room. Initially our room wasn’t cleaned and I was disappointed, but realized I had missed seeing the card that needed to be placed on the bed for room cleaning. It was cleaned when card placed on bed. We never made it to the nightly wine & cheese reception as we were always exploring the city! We did tour the home and recommend doing so. I believe there are daily tours at 11am. There’s so much history there and it’s been beautifully restored! It’s a gorgeous mansion that truly takes you back in time. Overall, we had a lovely stay & the staff were all wonderful! In order to get to dining and shopping you walk quaint, old historic streets with charming historic homes. Be sure to bring walking shoes! If we return we’ll definitely stay in the mansion!

This property has several rooms - some are in the main house: some are on street level (similar to a basement), and some are surrounded by a garden. We paid an exorbitant rate for a small garishly decorated room, without much light, and cheap ceramic tile floors (not the wood floors pictured). The one good thing - it was located on a quiet street. We also checked out a day early (for illness) and were still charged. Totally disputing Hotels.com because the independent hotel charge was half of what Hotels.com charged me. Never using this service again.

Cool place. Great location. Historic. Glad we stayed here. That said, creaky doors and floors, thin walls (expected in a 150 year old house). Marginal air conditioning. Service was incredible. Overall experience was great.

Our suite on the 3rd floor was very spacious and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. We really enjoyed breakfast as well as the evening wine & cheese socials on the front porch! The hotel doesn't have an elevator, and its location means a 10-15 minute walk to visit many of the city's attractions and restaurants. That suited us just fine, as we saw many lovely mansions and carriage houses on our daily walks. Taking pedicab rides to/from dinner was a nice (and relaxing) way to see the city at night! The hotel staff - in particular Ryan, Molly, Abby and Mack - were absolutely the best, they couldn't do enough to welcome us to the hotel and to Charleston. Thank you all for everything - we hope to be back someday soon!!!

My wife and I celebrated our 28th Wedding Anniversary at 20 South Battery and had a wonderful stay at the property. The staff was very welcoming and addressed all our needs. The location is great within walking distance to many bar, restaurants and shopping. Highly recommend!

Lovely property. Loved sitting on the front porch reading and with a bottle of wine. Also the garden. The wine and cheese hour was a very nice amenity. Room was very nice, clean and quiet.

Booked this hotel for my parents as a surprise 70th birthday trip. Exchanged lovely messages with the hotel manager in advance of their trip. They loved their stay, saying: the location, historic building, and staff were fantastic. Both ladies, Abigail and Molly, were super friendly and helpful when it comes to either accommodation or advice on what to see, etc. They offer daily tours of the building to guests where you can learn its rich history. They have nice evening treats for guests like wine, cheese and/or Italian liquor. You can enjoy it either inside, or on the mansion's big terraces and patios. We had a great time there, and we will be happy to visit them again.

This was our first trip to Charleston, and we decided to spend more than we usually would on a hotel in order to stay in a historic area that was walkable to most of where we'd be going. You could choose to stay here because of the location; you could choose to stay here because of the history; you could choose to stay here because of the amenities; but the reason you should choose to stay here is because of the staff. Abbi, Susan, Ryan, and Molly (we LOVE Molly) are absolutely incredible. This staff goes above and beyond expectations at every opportunity. I could list many examples of why, but the basic summary is that 20 South Battery will be the first place we'll try to book the next time we head to Charleston (without kids) again.

Abigail Molly and Ryan were FANTASTIC. This hotel is beautiful and our plan is to return next year for our first anniversary. The hotel is beautiful, the breakfast was outstanding and the wine and cheese in the evening was special as well as the nightcap available before bed. We just cannot praise 20 South Battery enough.
