Reviews
The hotel is generally praised for its cleanliness, comfortable beds, and convenient location near UC Berkeley and local amenities. However, there are several complaints about the breakfast, with guests finding it weak and not worth the extra cost. Additionally, some guests have experienced issues with the air conditioning and power outlets in their rooms.

Not a five-star hotel, but fine for an overnight stay. The room was clean and functional. One of the USB plugs did not work, but there were others that did. Location is on the edge of the downtown district, but still within walking distance of UCB. Nation’s burger location next door is a bonus for a quick meal.

Staff, cleanliness, location, comfort, safety, everything. It was in a perfect location. Clean room. Toiletries weren’t cheap. The staff were very nice and friendly.

Train was delayed. We phoned that we'd be late and were assured we'd be able to check in until 5am. Location was very convenient to downtown Berkeley. Groceries and restaurants nearby. Address was wrong on Maps. Driver delivered us to the wrong hotel at first. It's not a hotel, it's a rundown motel. Nightstand electric outlets/USB did not work. No bedside lamps. Only harsh overhead lighting. Room very dark in daylight. Cold shower any time of day or night, even if we let the water run. Toilet roll holder slanted downward, paper kept falling off. No towel racks. Harsh towels. Terrible breakfast. Room key stopped working. Had to get new one. Som said it happened to him three times. rude desk clerks. Noisy guests outside. Rates excessive for quality. Does not deserve Best Western label. Terrible!
- 2.5/5
Bads were comfortable and clean. Not up to best western standards. Not a hotel it is motel. Breakfast was terrible! Our toilet seat was broken with one holding bolt missing so vary hard to sit on seat without it falling off.

There was also NO front desk staff before 7 am. So I had to call them later for them to email me the receipt because I checked out at about 6 am. Breakfast was minimal and all items (except fruit) had very high sugar. There was also only one type of fruit each morning: either banana or apple.
- 5/5
The front desk guy was super helpful and nice and was able to attend to my concerns.

Breakfast wasn’t what I expected but I did enjoy the yogurts The shower does not have continuous hot water. If the water gets too hot and u turn it down, and try to turn the water back up again, it won’t get hot again I found mold by the mini fridge. The blankets on the bed are hella thin

I do not recommend anyone stay here unless it’s as a last resort.

Very clean. The bathroom was modern, and there were enough clean towels. No extra blankets. It was so cold that I ended up sleeping fully dressed, using the other bed's comforter to sleep a little more comfortably. I arrived at midnight and was greeted by a person on a screen, so there was no one to ask for blankets.

The location. That's all I can say. I already tried emailing twice to ask for a refund after my stay and never hard anything back. I recently stayed at the "Sather Berkley-SureStay Collection by Best Western" motel in SanFrancisco while attending an event. We arrived around 5pm so didn’t have much time before we needed to head out. We initially came by to drop off our bags and check in before we had to be at the first thing. The more I walked around the room, the more I realized the lack of actual cleanliness in the room. I didnt take photo of half of it. Needing to be at an event in under an hour after check-in, I didn't have the time to find a new place, not to mention the additional cost of trying to do that last minute. I also didn't feel it was the front desk's fault. This is a problem with a lack of standards being upheld from higher up. It needs to be addressed. We didn't get back till late that night. I slept on towels on top of the bed and left promptly the next morning. Please imagine how you'd feel having spent money on a place only to walk into what is pictured. Please ask yourself how acceptable you would find it. I have been traveling the U.S. & abroad in hotels, hostels, and airbnbs since I was a teenager. In all 26 years I've been traveling this was, legitimately, the dirtiest place I have ever stayed in. There were stains all over the room: The couch & carpet had rips in them. There were toothpaste spots on the mirrors. Hair stuck to the walls. The fridge had spills in the shelves & drawer and there was visible hair & dust or crumbs on the shelves. The doors and walls and bed-side lamps had stains & marks (the ones in photos were halfway up the walls) all over them to a degree that I can’t imagine going to someone’s lived-in house and seeing that level of build up. (Let alone a space that should be being routinely cleaned.) It was disgusting.

Checked into room 207 and lock on door was broken. Meaning you didn't need a key to open door. Told front desk and was told there was nothing they could do it about it. Could not get another room because hotel was full and beat they can so is 50 percent refund

The ac worked great, but there was no parking. And no staff if you needed anything. Had to check in on a virtual call.
- 3/5
The staff was very nice & answered any question that I asked. The rooms were decent-ish. You can tell they’ve been remodeled to an extent but the paint was peeling the bathroom, you could see the nails in the floor boards & the shower didn’t look overly clean. Also - 3

The beds and pillows were comfortable. No breakfast was served or available at the time we left (around 6:00 a.m.). Shower pressure was decent. Noise from the room above continued late into the night, along with people talking loudly outside the room. Parking was easy and had no issues. Overall, there wasn’t much I disliked. The only issue was that breakfast wasn’t available at the time we had to leave. Since breakfast was included in the room rate and I paid a bit more for the hotel expecting it, that was disappointing.

The inside lock was broken off. The manager was nice. The place was more motel. The location was not great or bad. The rooms was large but the photos were better than the actual place. more realistic photos on the exterior of the motel. Photo of the office would be helpful.

The room was nice and clean, the bed was comfortable, shower was hot and clean. The breakfast was basic: pastries, yogurts, coffee, juice, cereal, and oatmeal. Parking was free which is a plus. The soap dispenser was a little unsanitary in our opinion as you had to grip the bottle and squeeze the soap out rather than just pumping it out from the top. The main downside was that the room was not so soundproof. You could hear as people walked by the room and as they spoke, you could hear the housekeeping carts as the rolled up and down the walkways, you could hear traffic driving past the building, and we even heard someone snoring from the neighboring room. There was certainly room for improvement, but I still wouldn't say the property was bad.

It’s near the campus that’s definitely a benefit. On site parking There was a cockroach in my room, the mattresses are hard as hell old springy mattresses - little to no foam. The walls were dirty? A hole in the wall, the pictures are HIGHLY MISLEADING. It does not even look close to that. The sheets had stains so thankfully I had a double queen so I took the cleaner of the two. The ac was broke. I regret going low budget. Will pay double the price In the future if I have to.

Only location Bad beds. Toilette not working properly. Breakfast is a joke. Bad room fixtures. Low level stay.
- 4/5
Rooms were clean and comfortable. I appreciated the microwave and fridge and there was plenty of space for my family of 4. The insides of the rooms made us feel much better than when we pulled up and saw the outside of the building. You can tell someone put care into the remodel. I would stay there again. I would have been more nervous staying in this neighborhood if I was a single woman, but with my family it was fine.

Location is good, close to UC Berkeley. It’s a motel, close to busy street and very noisy. You can hear cars and buses’ noise from 5am. People are talking and passing by your window from early morning too. Its AC has very unpleasant smell so that I didn’t turn on the AC all night long. WiFi is bad. I can’t browse any websites unless I used my own data.
- 4.5/5
The property was well kept. The front desk staff were very nice and friendly. The room was clean. The location was perfect for our needs. I felt comfortable/safe with my car in the parking lot. The beds could be more comfortable. They were hard and not a soft pillow top. The back of the entry door and wall were kind of dirty but that didn’t affect the stay at all.

Had a really nice room , WiFi was alittle spotty but it was very nice. The staff was very nice as well close to Bart & other things.

The room was a good size clean quiet good for at night. That’s all I had.

The arrival experience was terrible. Got to the hotel with my family 9:30pm but the lobby was locked and there was no front desk agent onsite. They left a note that they would be back in 20 minutes but only came back almost 40 minutes later, so we had to sit in the car while was waited. It’s the worst arrival experience ever. I probably would have scored them average if that didn’t happen. Rooms were quite small too.
- 5/5
It was within walking distance to everything including a Trader Joe’s across the street. My check in person was very friendly and genuine. We were able to park right in front of our room which I love and the room has a nice bedroom feel. Doesn’t feel like a hotel. The bed was very comfortable and smelled very clean. Soft bathroom towels and plenty of them. Amazing air conditioner that didn’t cause any grief, wasn’t loud and actually worked! This is really even a complaint because I’ll definitely return. But it could use better attention to detail on cleaning. Like finger prints on the bathroom door and grungy bathroom corners. But nothing extreme at all, everything else including the bed was very comfortable and clean.

The room was fine, but the first night we couldn’t sleep at all. The walls are insanely thin, and our neighbors were all noisy which made sleep hard. But other than that the location was great, very close to bus stops and within walking distance of campus, downtown, and Telegraph. Parking was also super easy.

Unfortunately as the time went by I couldn't find anything to enjoy. Surprise security deposit.Although it was refundable still better to disclose upfront. The stained bed, lifting floor, dirty walls, mold in shower, noisy toilet and restroom had no fan, no blinds on window, mold starting to grow on ledge only to see a camera facing (from apartments directly behind) into restrooms. Worst feeling you could imagine. Did not even have my child shower. We packed so fast and left. Corporate was notified. Unfortunately this is not Best Western standards. We love to book Best Western always for amazing service and comfort. But this place is not it. Pictures on here are VERY deceiving. Please check reviews on Google as well before booking.

location was great. I was able to do early check in and was close to the campus to make the football game with the family. It was a great experience I don't think we had a bad experience the room was great and the service was great. Location itself didn't seem very safe but proximity to campus was great.

The staff was responsive when talked to, but overall were not around and seemed to be needing to deal with a lot Comfort - the beds were awful and painful to sleep on with squeaky spring mattresses. The blankets were rough and not comfortable. Luckily a good amount of pillows though Cleanliness - dirty floors when we showed up. They cleaned them the next day, but there were bits on the floor that couldn't be removed. They said it was because of glue from when the floor tiles were installed. Just looked messy and gross. There was also stray hairs left on the bedding Noise - through the whole night there were LOUD arguments coming from both outside and in rooms around us with swearing and yelling for both nights we were there. It was very disruptive and disturbing Breakfast - minimal foods available and very little of it. Basic quality too A/c - inconsistent and loud when used. The room alternated between being too hot and too cold Safety - the door seemed flimsy and had a safety lock that didn't seem like it would do much if someone tried to come in. Also there was a window in the bathroom that was small, but wasn't able to be locked. Since the room is open to the street, that was concerning

False advertising! This property is a motel, not a hotel. They shouldn't call it a hotel. The room was cramped and the coffee stirrers were dirty. I checked out after one night but they still charged me for two nights because of their "policy." What a joke!

Atrocious place. Waited at the door in the cold with heavy bags ringing bell until someone came and asked why I hadn't rung. Room was no more than a place to rest head during an extremely high pressure and stressful trip resolving personal business. Check out was aggressive and no accommodation was allowed nor offered (even for pay). The beds squeak and springy; bugs aroudn the open drains on first floow. Management staff act like deer in the headlights, totally unable to hear or understand whatever good/bad/urgent/funny thing is being said. I felt like an inconvenience the mgmt resented having there the whole time, in between reminders of how ripped off I was has just been suckered

The room was like a motel which I didn't realize, so you open the door and it leads to the parking lot. I was travelling alone so it felt unsafe. The neighbourhood is a bit rough with homeless people around. I didn't feel safe leaving at night. There was a small hole in the floor of the bathroom. One of the walls was very dusty and hadn't been cleaned in a long time. Breakfast was very small and in the tiny room that you check in at.

The property doesn't live up to the pictures, It is a much cheaper option that other downtown hotels and the free parking is a really nice perk. But it's a basic 2* motel with a light renovation. Bathroom was nicely redone with tile shower walls and tile floors. But there were a few hairs easily spotted on the toilet, 2 of 3 toiletries had fallen off the wall, a giant drywall problem on the ceiling, and both the hotel and street were very noisy. Breakfast was pretty modest and provided for takeout in the lobby which is a tiny area - only hot breakfast option was plain oatmeal packets - who provides plain? I guess that's all that was left at the bottom of the box. Cereals, 1 cup of yogurt, milk, pastry, and apples rounded out the small selection. Staff was helpful and friendly, and the bed was comfy with lots of nice pillows.

The bed was broken when we checked in. We immediately showed them. They said the would fix it or move us. The fix was to put a metal garbage can underneath the frame to hold it up. We stayed there three nights and they never permanently fixed it. We already reached out to Expedia but there was no response. Not good customer service by hotel or Expedia.

The Sather tries too hard to be cool. The bathroom has a barn door that isn't the right size, and offers no privacy. The floor boards were coming up in one spot, there was drywall damage that was poorly repaired, and paint was peeling in the bathroom. Then, the free WiFi keeps booting us out, and the TV loses signal every half hour or so. Not worth another stay.

Front desk staff were incredibly nice and helpful. Parking lot is small and they allowed us to use their staff spot instead of parking on the street. Rooms are a little dated but clean. Beds are too firm for my liking and the room ac’s cycle on and off all night, making it warm in the rooms when they aren’t running. Overall I felt like I got what we paid for

Filthy, stinky, disgusting room! I had room #207 upstairs and it was so bad -- the walls had holes in them that were patched and not painted. The floors visually had spills on them. The comforter had a disgusting yellow stain on it. The bathroom had no ventilation and the window needed to be opened to get out the moisture; however there was no screen on the window, letting in bugs. When I arrived there was a dirty rag on the floor. The hotel has a no smoking and no weed smoking policy but #207 reeked of ciggie smoke and it smelled like someone just lit a weed pipe. It was gross and my allergies started getting bad as soon as I went in and closed the door. This hotel is one of the worst that I've ever stayed in.

The room was dirty. The bedspreads were not only stained but also had fresh smears of dirt on them. There was a lot of water damage: loose and warped floor boards, peeling baseboards and threshold between bathroom and bedroom. The floor had dirt and some greasy spots. It was uncomfortably dirty. I would not stay here again.

This is a very good location, and with parking! (near campus), the staff is nice and right there. It's a pretty good second rate motel. My main complaint is super strong smell of cleaners they use but I went over the floor with a towel and opened my window and it dissipated over time. Also, the AC/heat blows on your when you sleep.
- 5/5
Room was clean and we were able to check in early! Very friendly staff!

*Rooms were partially cleaned. Floors badly stained, unmopped, not swept/dusted underneath the bed/beds. This is my experience from both rooms that I stayed in. I wiped everything down with clorox wipes. *I had to sleep on the "motels" parking lot due to the office staff not activating my card to the new room #104 after having checked out of #212. *No way to recieve assistance during nightime hours. * This place did nothing for my mental state. I explained during check-in that I was seeking solitude, peacefulness away from my family as I was grieving personal loss of my father and my daughter. Both recently deceased. Instead, someone near my room constantly argued loudly each day of my stay from sunrise to sunset. Listening to horrific profanity. No interventions from the hotel staff. I also witnesses someone driving a black Tesla back her vehicle into a customers vehicle and prepare to drive away until I spoke up to suggest leaving a note on the persons windshield. (You do not hit, back up, nor damage someones vehicle and drive away. How rude; inconsiderate. The best part of my stay was my daily walks to Traders Joe's-which was across the street. I was able to pirchase non-dairy ice-cream, fresh fruits, water. Some frozen meals since the rooms have microwaves and refrigerator. ATTENTION: BE PREPARED TO CLEAN REFRIGERATOR BEFORE USE. "OVERPRICED" UNCONCERNED.

You should not call it the Sather Hotel. It is clearly a motel, with all that that implies. Definitely not a hotel experience.
- 2/5
The staff was friendly and accommodating. But i must say the hotel is in terrible condition. Bathroom was dirty, the floor was so slippery, there was water damage all over the door frames and the cabinet where the fridge was. The bed sheet was stained, which let me to believe they dont change the bed after each guest, luckily i caught the cleaning service before they left an did change it out for me so i appreciated that. All in all i wouldn't stay there again for the price that i payed.

Close to greek theatre was good,a bit noisy on street and bed wasn't comfortable, all in all not too pricey and convenient.
- 4/5
Overall, it’s simply an ok place to stay nothing fancy. Hotel rooms were recently being renovated but in a budget. Good location in downtown and walking distance to shops and restaurants. I was woken up by a strange beeping noise coming from the attic at 2am. It kept beeping every 10 seconds and never stopped. Parking feels unsafe because it’s so close to the street and has no fence/wall. I didn’t have any expectation but hotel breakfast was a joke more like a snack protein bar.
- 3/5
Nice and clean room. Nice staff.

The only reason they are in business is due to the college town visitors and they care least about hospitality and service. Very dirty bathrooms, rude and indifferent front desk staff.Manager not on property most times and hard to talk to.But they hardly care as they keep getting business regardless of service due to Berkeley being a college town
- 3/5
My room floor was not clean however Staff was excellent.

Walking distance to the university and restaurants. Good parking and a resonable price.
- 4/5
Good inexpensive place to stay in Berkeley. Clean and good walking distance to the UC theater.
- 1/5
⸻ The front desk staff was unhelpful and a bit odd. I was placed in a room right next to the road—extremely noisy from traffic and foot traffic, making it impossible to sleep. The floor was also dirty, with dust coming in through gaps around the door and windows. For $293 a night, it definitely wasn’t worth it.
- 4/5
Price, location and availability of parking were excellent. Room, although a bit smaller than expected, was as advertised, very comfortable and lighting was excellent. Breakfast was very limited, but adequate. Toilet didn't flush properly at first, but was functional and got fixed as soon as I pointed out the problem. Overall, I was quite satisfied.
- 5/5
Staff very helpful even on a very busy week.
- 1/5
The bedding was dirty, and the shower was absolutely disgusting. There was even a used bar of soap left in the shower. The price was unbeatable since it included free parking, which is rare in Berkeley but not worth it. I am all for saving money, but there is a point where it outweighs any savings.

Good location if you are attending an event at the University. Unfortunately, the floors were dirty and the bed linens were stained. The room needed a good cleaning!
- 1/5
The rooms had visible wear and tear, the sheets / comforter were stained, the staff was rude and my toilet didn't work. I had to fill the tank with warer just to flush it every time (awful) and when i told them about it, they did nothing to fix it. I then had to hear the man at the front desk yell on the phone through the wall since my room was next to the lobby.

Upon check-in, the person at the desk was on a phone call which was very rude! When I entered the ADA room, there was a STRONG strange fragrance present as if they're trying to cover up an ongoing un-addressed unpleasant odor. I noticed stains on the white blanket on the bed. When I turned the bed down, there was a faint pink stain on the fitted sheet...like it couldn't be removed while being laundered. Entering the bathroom, I noticed noise from a drag-out fan that ran incessantly! There was no switch to turn it off, so I ended up keeping the bathroom door closed to alleviate the nagging sound. The shower stall was equipped with an affixed shower seat (at close glance, was NOT properly cleaned), and grab bars. The tile on the walls was very nice! However, the floor tile was horrendous!! The grouting was shoddy to say the least! There was NO attention to detail! Whatever was used to patch up the grouting issue, was sloppily applied! Thank goodness there was room ...I ended up using the corner of the space to avoid that area. The faucet had VERY poor water pressure! To make matters worse, the water drained slowly. I ended up lifting up the stopper which helped somewhat. I could go on and on, but why bother!! The lack of care shows!! Needless to say, I would not recommend the establishment! Perhaps other rooms were better suited. However, I seriously doubt it!

Stayed one night. Was very clean and nice. Room and shower were good sized. Don’t know why other reviews said it was filthy. I would stay here again.
- 3/5
With paying for the price of that room. I would have think they would refill their shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. When I went to shower in the morning time. Come to my disappointment. There nothing but empty bottles. I didn’t have time to go and ask of it. I was already running late.
- 5/5
A convenient place to stay, friendly staff. Trader Joe's across the street.
- 3/5
Great location with easy access to UC Berkeley campus by foot. Staff willing to switch room without question when we reported dirty bed cover. OK choice for those who don't want to spend a lot of money on hotel. Noise from building interrupted our sleep in the middle of the night. Didn't get the free breakfast offered because there was no place to sit down and eat.

My husband and I visit to Berkeley 2-3 times per year because my kid is attending at UC Berkeley. Hotel is good. Rooms are recently remodeled and clean. Beds are comfortable. Good for a budget hotel, rooms were cleaned well every day. The only down side was the "breakfast"...only a couple of packaged muffins, cereal and a coffee maker....kinda a waste of time, had to go out to get breakfast. Like the location....not too far from campus
- 4/5
Newly renovated older motor hotel. Great location near campus and restaurants. Good value for where it is
- 1/5
Expedia didn't show my reservation at the hotel, i requested 2 beds not 1 king bed, i specifically requested 2 beds for my sibling, I literally had to sleep in same bed as my brother!
- 4/5
decent location, exactly what i needed, parking lot is nice. rooms are clean and beds are comfortable.
- 3/5
Hotel was clean, it was near our family, so it was ok.
- 5/5
Very clean and modern, great shower!
- 2/5
The housekeeper was very friendly. The condition of our hotel room was quite run-down, and the front desk clerks were not friendly and seemed put out when I needed to visit the office. We were given a room downstairs, right next door to the housekeeping room. When we mentioned that the door next to us opened and slammed closed constantly and we heard running water and other noises throughout the day every day, rather than offering another room or some discount, the clerk simply said "sorry".
- 1/5
Do not give this establishment your money. They clearly don’t care about the quality of their property or their guests but will gladly take your money. I seriously thought I would get sick or bugs from staying another seconds in that motel. In the future I vow to always check my guest room before I hand over my credit card.
- 2/5
First of all, front guy shouted to me credit card‼️I really couldn’t understood his accent, I’m not racist or prejudice. I’m second language English, maybe he is too. But, it was not good experience. I could hear road side and upstairs noise. I couldn’t believe this hotel is a part of Best Western hotel group.
- 4/5
I like this place to stay when I visit my daughter at UC Berkeley because of the short walking distance to the UCB, very comfortable bed(s), new shower room, renovated rooms. However, the breakfast is not prepared enough. When I went to the office to pick up some food, only coffee and a few danish bread were left. It was 8:30am.
- 3/5
Car got broken in sometime within 12 hours from late evening to mid-morning. Would not want to stay again
- 5/5
Hotel has no elevator & stairs are exposed to elements.
- 2/5
The most disturbing attribute was the fact that the flimsy floor tiles were curling up and became a trip and cutting hazard to bare feet. The second most disturbing was the sound transmission between the first and second floor that allowed foot fall, music and dancing noise to be heard from the adjoining space.

The room was okay, but very cramped. The beds were lumpy & uncomfortable and the air conditioner did not work so it was very hot. (Pretty sure management knew this but did not inform us at check in). Location was good and there was parking so that was helpful.

The rooms are not the same as advertised they are very small. The conditions of the room are terrible. There were stains on the comforter and dirt and stains all over the walls and doors. The free breakfast is just stale bread and watered down juice.
