I notified the Inn that we are expecting a 50% Refund on our Stay , as they are running it at less than that . For the following reasons , Advertising a Pool , when their License for it ran out at the end of September . Stuffy Room with no airflow , no Fan , and Temperature controlled by Staff , which led us to waking up in the middle of the night freezing , because the night Staff was inconsiderate of the Guests . Extra Blankets may have helped. Bath Towels barely big enough to dry off , Small Hand Soap Bars not Bath bars for Showering , No Shampoo , No Kleenex tissue . Dirt between Doors , as Front Screen Door did not close and no Handle to pull it close . Two Stink Bugs that had to be caught and flushed down the toilet . Could feel that the Carpeting was Dirty , as well as stains on the Bed Comforter . Poor Internet Caused T.V. to cut or freeze , or just stop working . We were told when we arrived that the Inn had been Sold , and it was very apparent to us . If you are going to run your Inn like this , with no Respect or Consideration for your Guests , you shouldn't be running it at all ! And for this reason we are expecting a 50% Refund , when we should probably be Fully Refunded , as it put a real Stain on our time in Asheville N.C.

The only real downside of my stay was spotty internet connectivity, but I'm willing to chalk this up to the sort of period, time-travel element of staying here.

We arrived to the hotel and it was soooo outdated for the price and we didn’t have AC so they offered us a fan which was a joke. The toilet was unstable and rocked back and forth. It smelled very stale. We ended up leaving and renting another place.

The employees were very nice. Usually i like ac units in the hotels i stay at, but the temperature was good anyway. I didnt mind taking my service dog with me everywhere. Overall a good place.

The front desk people were very nice and helpful. The bathroom had some dark areas and corners that probably could be cleaned up with bleach. The rest of the bathroom area was clean. It would’ve been helpful to have had more than two small towels. Location is good for going places.

I loved the overall feel of the motel. Even though it is dated the bed was extremely comfortable. I loved that they do fires in the pit. There are are two chairs outside each room to enjoy the scenery. Overall it's a great place to stay. I also like the fact they don't let locals stay there. Local to them is within 50 miles. I would definitely recommend this location!

It’s a motel, of course, not a hotel, but a motel in the most retro sense of things, and they’ve done a great job taking care of it. The pool is pristine, and would be lovely on a warm evening. The rooms are clean, comfortable, cozy, and they’ve preserved the knotty pine panels (NOT paneling … knotty pine bead board), and it’s beautiful. Didn’t find a thermostat in the room, but didn’t need one—the temp was just right. Good old fashion (very clean) tile in the bathroom, nice showers and very hot water. If you’re looking for a genuine motor inn, very conveniently located, and really a bit of Asheville history, highly recommend. And the price is right.

The location is great. Close to lots of restaurants and downtown Asheville. Just some things to know. There is coffee maker and coffee in the rooms. No decaf coffee is available. There are no blow dryers in the rooms. The front desk does have blow dryers. For the money we had a good stay!

It’s a pleasant location and view. The rooms are very dated but are clean and maintained. Everyone on the morning and night staff was aces, both friendly and helpful. Good value.

Check in staff made us feel like an inconvenience to them, however there was a maintenance man that found me a shower chair, i am disabled and the tub/shower was very slick, there was no non- slip mat in the tub/shower, nor do they provide them. I do not plan on staying here again.

I love the Mountaineer. It's a bit run down, but it's great if you like an interesting place to stay with a diverse clientele. They say they're doing some significant upgrades soon--which is welcome but I hope they don't destroy the place's charm in the process.

The hotel and my visit was great, but if all possible, avoid driving on I 240: especially heading North or West through the downtown section. I wasn't ready and it showed. Now that I know how it works, I'll continue to take the Blue Ridge and Tunnel Rd. Grin.

You get what you pay for. The staff is great. The rooms are fine. The pillows were awful.. very lumpy and old. The room didn't include shampoo. But, I would stay again. I am not keen on paying $250 a night somewhere else when I'm barely there.

The room was quaint but the bed was uncomfortable. We slept on a 1st floor room and at 1 am I was woken by the horrible smell of someone smoking. I have asthma therefore I woke up choking. It was as if someone was blowing smoke directly in my face. They kept happening on and off until we left at 545 am. That is the most uncomfortable, rude, smoke filled room that I have ever stayed at.

We chose The Mountaineer based on price and on the vintage neon signage. We prefer hotels and motels with character, but the Mountaineer wasn’t just about retro charm. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the room was cold and very quiet, and our king bed was the nicest bed that we slept in on our road trip (even better than Airbnb host beds). The inn does live up to its retro charm though, with wood accent and beautiful tiled showers. We especially liked that the rooms have wood slat screen doors in addition to the regular doors because it made it much more convenient to sit on the lawn chairs outside. We only had two nights in town so we just used the pool briefly, but it looked like a great setup to have a picnic and swim if traveling with more folks. We would recommend to anyone who appreciates a great deal and a vintage vibe.

The motel has a “No Locals” policy, which I knew nothing about until I tried to check in. I was able to get a refund, but that hardly made up for my prepaid reservation being rejected based solely on my zip code.

Fast and easy checkin process. Older property but a bit worn down. Carpeting wasn't the cleanest. Saw a big black spider in the room but not until we were ready to leave (luckily). Strong deodorant smell through the central air conditioning. Otherwise, livable for our 3 night stay.

I understand the age of the place probably from the 70's and I am ok with that kind of cool actually , however this place is in some serious need of some updating, rooms , beds , bathroom, ect. It was kind of odd that both my wife and I needed to show our drivers licences upon check in , actually had to go get her out of the car to do so , seemed a little schetchy , check in lobby had monitors with a veiw of every part of the facilities and again made us a little concerned , all that said we didnt have any issues and left at 11the next morning , I would probably spend the extra couple bucks next time and stay somewhere else.

The hotel has a fire pit and a nice sized clean outdoor pool. They had a pet area. The inside of the hotel was nice however the bathroom could have been cleaner and the beds were old and hard. I would say it was good for the price if you’re looking for some more outdoor time.

We loved the room! It was very clean. The Inn is also in a very convenient location close to downtown Asheville for those wanting to explore the area!

The next day there were bees everywhere. Bees were in both stairwells (no elevator) and you had to walk through them to get to out of the second floor.

The room is nice, for the price. Bed was comfortable and there is a wooden “screen” door that provides privacy but allows air (but bugs, too 😢). I did not like that I couldn’t control the temperature of my room, the shower is extremely small and needs updated!

The motel still retains some of the old atmosphere of a 1950s motel; you even say hello to your neighbors and might get into a conversation with them. The lawn and trees are nice. It's not fancy and isn't for people looking for slick modern accommodations; go to the Holiday Inn or Best Western for that. I wished they'd dim the lights along the porch at night; even with the room darkening drapes, the florescent light glares into the rooms.

Please read that there is a deposit hold of $100. Cash or credit card. Some reviewers made negative comments. It clearly states the deposit requirement. Staff was super kind and personable. Location is walkable to restaurants , ABC liquor etc. I recommend staying here if you want to experience a part of history.

but not having hot water had to call office to have heat or air conditioner adjusted it was not in the room no room cleaning was told they only clean every three days we only stayed two so no cleaning im still waiting on my 100 deposit to be released

A bit run down - things like a sink faucet that was hard to turn on; a bathroom door strike plate screwed on backwards, so the door couldn't close; bathroom tiles in need of regrouting, etc. But for our one night stay the place was perfectly adequate.

She took my cash and refused to give me a receipt or acknowledgement of any kind. What business insists on taking cash and then expects you to walk out of the door with absolutely nothing in your hand showing you've paid? I throughly enjoyed my stay here!!! I loved the peace and quiet. I loved the old school vibe! The staff was spot on… no issues at all with what I paid for. My go to for years to come! Kudos to the mountaineer Inn!!! 😀😀😀

I throughly enjoyed my stay here!!! I loved the peace and quiet. I loved the old school vibe! The staff was spot on… no issues at all with what I paid for. My go to for years to come! Kudos to the mountaineer Inn!!! 😀😀😀

Check-in girl was extremely polite and efficient. Room was spacious but had no temperature control (was rather warm), shower stall was tiny. Room contained major amenities except hair dryer.

Terrible place to stay! Lock on door was broken. Very aged and in poor condition. Woke up to no water. No offer of refund or even partial return on money paid for stay. Only offer was”we have bottled water if you want it”

The shower curtain was dirty and the coffee in the room was very weak. The room was cold when I arrived.

No heat ! No hair dryer…..we had to have them supply a space heater which did NOT keep us warm enough. $100 cash deposit required. The place looks like it was built in the 50’s pink sink and bathtub cedar siding on two facing walls . Got my cash deposit back but I believe I was owed more $ back since we were NOT COMFORTABLE. Lots of seedy characters roaming around …..

We checked in late evening as our flight was a late flight to North Carolina. Front desk, door was closed, locked. Nobody in sight. We had to call the phone number and finally some young lady came from the other side of the buildings and checked us in. She looked exhausted but was friendly. We had a room in the second floor and it was old, dirty and even water bugs were on the dresser! If it had not been so late into the evening, we would had checked out. We slept with our travel clothes on, as we were afraid to open our luggage and risk bugs crawling in. The bathroom was old, ancient and didn't flush well. I would not recommend this place for the price, it was not worth it. Run down place for over $200 a night.

Great location.. inexpensive. Deposit on room more than the room cost. Shared heating no individual heat or ac shared cigarette smoke too YUCK. I asked in the morning if the rooms in back were different, they are. So i recommend this place for the value, however ask for a non smoking in the back area. Its a good place to stay. Great continental breakfast and nice staff.

I agree with a previous comment that said this place is a blast from the past. It’s dated but in a retro way. Our room was clean and there was breakfast included. I liked that it was pet friendly ($12 fee). Good location close to downtown Asheville. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely return!

This place was scary, sketchy, full of loud rowdy people, run-down, and generally didn't feel safe.

The property is pretty old so the rooms (at least the one I stayed in) aren't really going to blow you away. But for the price, you can't beat it. Our room had everything we needed and that's all that mattered to my wife and I. If you are in town and just need a decent bed and shower for a good price, this is the place. No complaints.

Also, mos def would not recommend this motel for unaccompanied women. Everytime my daughter and I left the room some random guy would start trying to pick us up. The Saturday night we stayed these guys all sat outside their rooms and talked and laughed. Til early hours of Sunday. Never saw a sign of security personnel, and knew that calling the front desk would be useless. One of the worst booking decisions I've ever made.

I like to support local motels instead of chains, and this one had a great staff and good climate control in the room - but otherwise, it's in need of updates. The mattress was old, there were threadbare sheets on it, stains on the bathroom floor, grit in corners, and people coming and going all night long beeping horns, putting things in coolers, walking around, and slamming car doors. If it weren't for the a/c unit's white noise, we would've gotten no sleep. Overall, not a safe-feeling or comfortable place to stay. Probably why the rates are so low.
